Therapy for People Who Struggle with Big Emotions

Therapy for Teens and Adults Who Struggle with Big Emotions or Emotional Dysregulation

Helping You Feel More Grounded, Present, and In Control of Your Emotions

If you often feel overwhelmed by your emotions, you’re not alone. Some people experience feelings so intensely that they seem to take over—whether it’s sadness that feels bottomless, anxiety that makes it hard to think clearly, or anger that seems to come out of nowhere. You might feel confused by your own reactions or exhausted from trying to manage them all on your own.

Sometimes emotions seem to come in too fast or stay around too long. You may try to hide them, suppress them, or “power through,” but they keep showing up in relationships, work, or your own inner dialogue. It can start to feel like you’re at war with yourself.

Therapy can help you better understand these emotional patterns and build the capacity to respond with more compassion, awareness, and choice.

What Is Emotional Dysregulation?

Emotional dysregulation is when your emotional responses feel out of proportion, hard to control, or unpredictable. You may find yourself:

  • Crying or shutting down more easily than others

  • Becoming irritable or reactive even when you don’t want to

  • Struggling to calm down once something upsets you

  • Overthinking or getting stuck in cycles of guilt, shame, or worry

  • Feeling flooded by emotion and then feeling numb afterward

  • Regretting things you said or did in the heat of the moment

  • Finding it hard to explain why something felt so upsetting

This is not about being “too sensitive.” Often, emotion dysregulation is connected to early experiences where emotions weren’t safe to express or where support was inconsistent. These early patterns can shape the nervous system and carry forward into adulthood.

How Therapy Can Help

As a psychodynamic and attachment-based therapist, I look beyond surface-level symptoms to understand what your emotions are trying to communicate. Together, we’ll explore how past relationships and early experiences may have shaped the way you relate to your own feelings, and what kinds of internal rules you’ve learned about emotional expression.

You may have internalized beliefs like “I’m too much,” “No one will understand me,” or “I have to keep it together for everyone else.” Our work together can help untangle these patterns and create space for a new way of being.

We’ll build a relationship that feels safe, consistent, and attuned so that you can begin to feel less alone in your experience and more empowered in how you respond to it.

Integrating Tools from ACT and DBT

In addition to deeper exploration, I also integrate practical tools from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). These modalities help you develop new ways to regulate emotions, manage distress, and take committed action in line with your values.

Together, we may work on:

  • Mindfulness and grounding techniques

  • Naming and noticing emotional experiences without judgment

  • Learning how to soothe yourself in moments of distress

  • Building awareness of your triggers and patterns

  • Practicing boundaries and effective communication

  • Understanding what matters most to you, and how to move toward it even when big feelings arise

Therapy isn’t about getting rid of emotions. It’s about understanding them and learning how to live with them in a more skillful, compassionate, and integrated way.

You Don’t Have to Navigate Big Emotions Alone

Whether you’ve been feeling emotionally out of control for years or are just beginning to notice the toll it’s taking on your life and relationships, therapy can help. Together, we’ll create space for both emotional insight and emotional regulation, so you can feel more present, more grounded, and more like yourself.

I offer in-person sessions in Buckhead as well as online therapy across Georgia.
